More bang for less buck (and in less space) – the fairy tale of the Microwulf

September 1, 2007 · Leave a Comment

There is a post on Entertaining Research today about getting 1 Gflop for less than $100. Basically it’s about…

Microwulf is a personal, portable Beowulf cluster, providing over 26 Gflops of measured performance, for less than $2500. Its dimensions are just 11″ x 12″ x 17″, making it small enough to fit on one’s desktop or in a suitcase.

Ofcourse this means that one could get 1 Tflops for less than $100000, but one would need a fairly large suitcase (or 38 regular sized once). Undersigned ubergeek outgrew the desktops and workstations of mere mortals long time ago so this sounds like the stuff of fairy tales. The next step (obviously) is to cram you cluster into…, say a lunch box which would make your next flight rather interesting…

For those of you with carry-on, high-performance computing clusters, please ensure that they are securely stowed underneath the seat in front of you.

How do people come up with all those ideas…, and (perhaps more importantly) how come I never thought of cramming a cluster into a shoe box…, it’s elementary! My Dear Watson.
